2020: Joint Knowledge Transfer Framework for Food Standards and Food Safety Analysis
Abstract:
This report outlines the activities of the Joint Knowledge Transfer (JKT) Framework for Food Standards and Food Safety Analysis during its first three-year programme (2017–2020). The initiative was jointly funded by Defra, the Food Standards Agency (FSA), Food Standards Scotland (FSS), and the Government Chemist to improve knowledge sharing and strengthen analytical capability within UK food control laboratories. The programme aimed to maximise resource efficiency, enhance laboratory preparedness for food safety and food fraud incidents, and support implementation of recommendations from the 2014 Elliott Review following the 2013 horse meat incident. Knowledge transfer activities included workshops, electronic seminars (e-seminars), and work instructions, providing training on analytical techniques and best practice. The programme also introduced emerging detection technologies relevant to food safety and authenticity testing). These activities helped disseminate methodological guidance, analytical tools, and practical advice to laboratories responsible for food testing and enforcement
